10 Ways to Automate Your Life Using IFTTT

One of my new favorite websites is IFFT, which stands for If This, Then That. It’s an incredibly easy service that lets you set up or create recipes for automating things. It works with nearly 60 applications & technologies (called channels) such as Facebook, Twitter, dropbox, email, SMS, etc. By filling out a simple form you can create connections between the different channels and trigger actions that you want to take place.

For example, what if you wanted to know if it was going to rain BEFORE you left for work in the morning? You could set up an IFTTT recipe to text you when weather conditions in your area indicated rain. Not only are recipes easy to create, but most of them are already created and are available through the Browse feature (which also lets you search). I’m a huge movie fan so I get an email whenever Netflix adds a new movie to its Instant Watch service. Here are some more IFTTT recipes to get you started:

1.) When my Facebook profile picture changes, update my Twitter profile picture.

2.) Let me know if it’s going to rain.

Get a text message every time the forecast says it’s going to rain. This will in essence monitor the Weather Channel for a change in conditions to “Rain”.

3.) Email When New Netflix Streaming Movies Are Available

I love watching movies on Netflix instant watch, so I have this alert set up to send me an email notification every time they add a new movie to their collection.

fb-dropbox

4.) Every time I’m tagged in a photo on Facebook, it will be sent to Dropbox.

https://ifttt.com/recipes/1760
This is one of my personal favorites because I love to be tagged in photos on Facebook, but I oftentimes forget to make a copy of the image for myself. This recipe will automatically create backups of those images you’re tagged in and send them to your Dropbox account.

rss-email

5.) When a new book is added to Kindle Top 100 Free eBooks, send me an email

This is an important one for librarians and book lovers alike! Don’t miss out on any of the free eBooks for the Kindle reader by setting up an email alert notifying you when a new eBook is available.

6.) Tweet my Facebook status updates

BONUS:

Text me if the CDC reports a Zombie outbreak

https://ifttt.com/recipes/48155
Now this one’s important! And actually it’s probably the most important alert you’d want to receive. With this recipe can set up an automatic text message to be sent to your phone in the event the CDC reports a Zombie Outbreak.
